The 68000 Microprocessor: Hardware and Software Principles and Applications
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (July, 1997)
Author: James L. Antonakos
Average review score:

Excellent Book !
I purchased this book about a year ago, and I have now read it pretty-much cover-to-cover. It is an excellent book. What I have found is that there are very few books on the market that cater to the individual who wants to build a microcomputer, starting from square one. This book caters to that market. If you are trying to build a Motorola 68000 system "from scratch", this book is for you. Be aware that there are a few pieces of information in the book that seem to be out of date. For instance, in the "working system" Mr. Antonakos describes how to build, he recommends an easier-to-use version of a UART that was apparently meant for the old Motorola 6800. The serial communications chip he recommends is now obsolete. However, as I have plowed my way through the morass of parts sellers and other charlatans, I have found that MANY parts are obsolete, even ones listed in the current catalogs of some of the biggest, most reputable IC distributors. Antonakos cannot be blamed for that. If you are interested in "building from scratch" with a Motorola 68000, also be aware of another data point : the 68000 seems to have an obituary written on it. My nose tells me Motorola is going to pull the carpet out from under it, maybe soon, or maybe not for another couple of years. In any case, it doesn't seem like the 68000 is going to be around for long. If you want to do it (build your own 68000 system), get this book and do it now !

outstanding "pratical" text on the 68000
This is a very good introduction about the 68000 from a pratical point of view, both at the assembly language level and at the hardware level.Only bad point is the accluded diskette which i found very tricky to use.The style of exposition of mr Antonakos is outstanding and very easy to follow.A great introduction to the 68000.

Practical Data Structures Using C/C++
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (August, 1998)
Authors: James L. Antonakos and Kenneth C., Jr. Mansfield
Average review score:

A Great Intro to Basic Data Structures!
I had some C programming knowledge but I needed to enhance my skill set to include the use of data structures. This book did the job. It shows how to construct basic data structures and use some basic sorting and searching algorithms on those data strtuctures. I highly recommend this book to people who have some C programming skills but who don't have a degree in Computer Science. So if you are novice C programmer and want to write more sophisticated programs(mulitple files, use of data structures, pointers, and such) get this book. Unlike univeristy-level algorithms and data structures books, this book leaves out the math and I thank the authors for that! By the way, the C++ portion of the book is so insignificant it should not have been listed in the title. This is a 'C' language text.

Structured C for Engineering and Technology

It is easy to understand.
Compare to other text books,I didn't have to guess what the authors are trying to say when I read it. This is the most I like about the book--easy to understand.

Reference Guide to C and C++
Published in Textbook Binding by Prentice Hall (19 May, 1998)
Authors: James L. Antonakos, Kenneth Mansfield, and Kenneth C. Mansfield Jr
Average review score:

A Good Slim Reference for Beginners!
Covers the basic, yet probably most used, C/C++ constructs. Makes for a good little handy reference only. I would recommend as a supplement text to beginner programmers working with C/C++. The authors do a good job of explaining C/C++ constructs in an easy to understand language. Lots of simple diagrams and example code. Highly recommend to Newbies like me! :)

Reference Guide to C and C++ - A Student's Opinion
Great book! It gave really clear explanations (including examples) of all the concepts I needed to read up on.

Mastering A+ Certification
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (28 December, 2001)
Authors: James L. Antonakos and Kenneth C. Mansfield
Average review score:

Fix a few minor errors and updates and this is a winner.
CompTia has changed the A+ exam and the newest exam has new objectives. With this book and lab manual you have a very good chance of passing and overall this book does cover each objective for the newest exam. It is broken down in to 2 section Hardware and Operating systems.

The 800 plus page book has 50 exercises. With part 1 tackling the Hardware test. Labs for safety, number systems, number conversions, CPUs, IRQs, memory types, expansion slots, POST, BIOS, CMOS, storage devices and systems, video, modems, printers and networking, although the last 2 sections needs a little more information.

Part 2 the Operating Systems include coverage of 95, 98, NT and 2000 which included installation, configuration, settings, virus, Windows CE, Novell, Linux, networking and finally troubleshooting, internet and email. Although each objective is covered areas outside the exam are also covered and should be removed and focused on the actual exam.

There is review questions, self test, activities at the end of each chapter. The first of 2 cds included has demo version of McAfee Utilities and the second had Exam Gear practice software with over 500 questions. Fix the small areas and re-release and this book may be the choice for those trying to self study for the exam.

Introduction to Computer Networking
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Kenneth C. Mansfield, James L. Antonakos, and James L. Antanakos
Average review score:

Used this book for class
The book is pretty decent in how it is written and the amount of topics but there are some areas that I found to be wrong compared to what is accepted as standards from Microsoft & Cisco and other networking bodies.

The self-tests and the exams that is given from the instructor manual is very poorly written and many of the questions are so vague on what they are looking for that you have a very slim chance of guessing the correct answer and some of the answers that is in the instructor's manual for the self-test and exams are just plain wrong so if the instructor is not very knowledgeable in the subject (like mine was) the student suffers with a poor grade.

Some of the topics covered in the book dealing with Operating Systems is pretty out of date. Some of the major changes between windows NT and 2000 are explained but in such a way that the reader comes out not knowing what is NT and what is 2000.

If you want to learn networking concepts I suggest you look to another book that is more current with network technologies because this one falls flat.
